  • Greenhouse gas emissions from Sweden's economy decrease by 1,5 percent in 2023

    Greenhouse gas emissions from Sweden's economy amounted to 49 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents in 2023, which corresponds to a decrease of 1,5 percent compared to 2022. The emission reductions are mainly seen in the energy sector, the steel and metal industry, and in private consumption, where car driving accounts for the majority of emissions. During the same period, GDP decreased by 0,1 percent, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gas intensity in the economy by 1,4 percent in 2023.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions decreased 2022 for most of Sweden’s counties

    Greenhouse gas emissions decreased in 2022 compared to 2021 for 19 of Sweden’s 21 counties. The only exceptions were Stockholm and Blekinge. The emission intensity (the emissions of greenhouse gases per unit of economic output) also decreased in all counties except Stockholm and Blekinge.

  • Reduced extraction of natural resources in 2023

    After several years of a rising trend, domestic material consumption has turned downward during the last two years. In 2023, 242 million tonnes of natural resources were extracted in Sweden, which is a reduction of 7.5 percent since 2022. Domestic material consumption also decreased during 2023. It amounted to 22.2 tonnes per person in 2023 which is a reduction of 9 percent since 2022.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy increased during the third quarter of 2024

    Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy increased by 6.4 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter in 2023. The largest increases in emissions are from household consumption, the construction industry and the transport sector. The trends in emissions follow the same pattern as the two previous quarters of 2024.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy increase during the second quarter of 2024

    Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy increase by 5.6 percent in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter in 2023. The largest increase between these quarters is for emissions from households, the construction industry and the transport sector. The emission intensity for the Swedish economy increases by 4.5 percent during the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter in 2023.
